Abstract

The NSW eMR program is one of the largest clinical information system implementations outside of the USA and UK. This clinical transformation program commenced 18 months ago and entails the rapid implementation of five Cerner clinical solutions across seven out of the eight Area Health Services in NSW. The implementation will have a significant impact on clinical work practice, as a result of which change management has been formally recognised as a critical element of the implementation strategy. Responsibility for the implementation is a partnership between HealthTechnology, the Area Health Services and the vendor, Cerner Corporation.

This paper will provide (1) an update on the implementation strategy and experiences of managing resources and tactics used to overcome barriers and (2) an overview of the Organisational Change Management framework in place for the program as well as some practical examples of experiences with organisational change management.

The presentation objectives are to:

  1. Outline Change Management requirements associated with IT implementations
  2. Describe eMR Organisational Change Management Strategy

The presentation will cover key elements of the eMR Change Management strategy including:

  • Current state analysis
  • Analysing the gap between current and future state
  • Stakeholder management and communications
  • Learning and development
  • Benefits – from words to reality.
